OTD Faculty and Staff gather at the AOTA Annual Conference with Entry-level and Post-professional OTD students.

Faculty in Baylor University's Department of Occupational Therapy are more than gifted teachers and occupational therapy practitioners. They are also talented researchers and scholars. The 2022 calendar year was marked by an exceptional surge of scholarly work by the Occupational Therapy faculty. Here are a few highlights from throughout the year:

January

  • Kayla Collins announced as Graduate Professional Director for Baylor’s Post-professional OTD Program

  • Kayla Collins received a Teaching Exploration Grant from Baylor University to for her interprofessional research project; Designing a Collaborative Care Observation Assessment Tool for Addressing Social Determinants of Health.

February 

  • Bridget Scheidler peer-reviewed manuscript—Occupational Therapists' Perceived Preparedness to Work with Children Exposed to School Shootings—was accepted for publication. Kayla Collins also contributed as an editor. 

  • Barbara DoucetMary Beth Patnaude, and Kirsten Davin were recognized as Baylor Creations 2022 Exhibit Honorees for submission of their scholarly work to the Baylor Creations committee. The annual Creations exhibition supports the research ambitions articulated in Baylor's academic strategic plan, Illuminate, and celebrates the transformational research and scholarship of our faculty, graduate students, and staff.

    • Kirsten Davin: Telepresence Robot Use with Clinical Simulation in Occupational Therapy.

    • Barbara Doucet: Interventions within the scope of occupational therapy to improve activities of daily living, rest, and sleep in people with Parkinson’s disease: A systematic review. 

    • Mary Beth Patnaude: Early physical dysfunction practice skills for the occupational therapy assistant.

  • Bridget Scheidler and Kayla Collins facilitated the Robbins College Interprofessional Education Colloquium.

March

  • Kayla Collins and Bridget Scheidler presented two educational sessions at the Online Learning Consortium’s Innovate conference in Dallas, Texas.

    • Innovative Strategies for Reducing Cognitive Load in a Blended Program: Leveraging Online Tools to Prepare Students for In-Person Learning.

    • Escaping the Mundane: A Multiple Case Study Exploration of the Versatility of Virtual Escape Rooms in Hybrid Learning Environments

  • Kayla Collins, Marian Gillard, and Kirsten Davin presented an educational session at the Online Learning Consortium’s Innovate conference in Dallas, Texas.

    • Designing accelerated-blended programs: A model for healthcare education and beyond.

April

  • Teresa Fair-Field represented the Department of Occupational Therapy and presented her outstanding research at the Robbins College Research Dialogues event with the Baylor University College of Engineering and Computer Science.

  • Faculty presentations at the annual AOTA Inspire 2022 Conference included:

    • There’s Nowhere to Observe! Enhanced Knowledge Acquisition Opportunities for Future OT Candidates, poster presented by Susan B. Blair

    • Infant Motor Screening via Parent-Led Video: Using a Machine Learning Regression-Derived AIMS Salient Set, poster presented by Teresa Fair-Field

    • Development & Implementation of a Community-Based Fall Prevention Program at a Local Church, poster presented by Mary Beth Patnaude

  • Kaya Collins and Bridget Scheidler published an article in the Teaching Professor professional magazine titled Entertaining Education Designing and Developing Virtual Escape Rooms for Learning.

May

  • Kayla Collins was invited to serve a three-year appointment on Baylor University's Teaching, Learning, and Technology Committee

  • Kirsten Davin was awarded the Learning Design Fellowship from Baylor University Libraries. These fellowships seek to encourage the creation of quality online courses in collaboration with a Learning Experience Designer for use in Baylor graduate and undergraduate curricula.

  • Kirsten Davin was invited to present at InstructureCon 2022, hosted by Instructure, the company that produces the Canvas Learning Management System. Her presentation—Canvas in Effective Hybrid Course Design—can be viewed here.

  • Mary Beth Patnaude received an AOTA Service Commendation for the COE (Commission on Education) Curriculum Design Taskforce.

June

  • Kayla Collins received the 2021-2022 Outstanding Volunteer award for serving children in her local school district.

July

August

  • Bridget Scheidler was selected as a 2022 University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions Outstanding Alumni.

  • Christine Davis was selected to serve a three-year term on the Baylor University Teaching Development Grant Committee.

  • Christine Davis was selected as a mentee and Marian Gillard was selected as a mentor in the 2022-2023 AOTA Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Program cohort.

  • Kelly Layne and Kayla Collins presented at the World Federation of Occupational Therapists; Being an occupational therapist and a mother during a pandemic: An international perspective of the perceived impact of COVID-19 on the occupational balance, role participation and satisfaction, and coping strategies of mothers who are occupational therapists.

  • Kayla Collins was selected as a speaker by Baylor’s Learning Design team as a subject matter expert for the Designing Instruction for Virtual Engagement (DIVE) series (module 3).

September

  • Susan Blair's submission—Influencing Perceptions of Frailty in Urban and Rural Older Adults—was accepted by the Physical and Occupational Therapy in Geriatrics journal.

October

  • Kirsten Davin published "Home Modification for Aging in Place" in Rehab Management.

  • Kirsten Davin and Bridget Scheidler spoke about "Aging in Place Home Modification Strategies Discussion" on the Rehab Management podcast.

  • Susan Blair presented "Multigenerational Approaches to Learning and Communication" and "Recognizing and Reducing Frailty Risk in Older Adults – Role of OT in Assessment, Intervention and Community Application" at the Hawaii Occupational Therapy Annual Conference.

  • Barbara Doucet's article "Evidence Connection: Occupational therapy to improve ADLs in persons with Parkinson’s disease" was accepted for publication in the January 2023 issue of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy.

December

  • Robbins College Pure Gold Award Winner Dr. Kelly Layne (Nomination by Dr. Jerilyn Callen)

    “Dr. Layne is a true testament to the principle of servant leadership. Kelly consistently goes over and above to ensure students have the tools and skills necessary to be agents of change in the ever-changing landscape of healthcare. Kelly continuously looks for ways to reach every student learner through innovation and compassion. Kelly never fails to lift her students and instill faith and kindness. She is an asset to Baylor and the entire OT community.”

  • Jerilyn Callen accepted into the UC Davis Napa Infant-Parent Mental Health Fellowship Program. She is the only occupational therapist and the only educator in the 2023 cohort.

  •  Jerilyn Callen appointed to serve on the American Occupational Therapy (AOTA) Roster of Accreditation Evaluators for a three-year term starting January 2023.

  • Dr. Teresa Fair-Field submitted a manuscript to Early Human Development (Elsevier) titled “Enhancing Motor Screening Efficiency: Toward an Empirically Derived Abridged Version of the Alberta Infant Motor Scale.”
