Course Descriptions

HHS 6230 Teaching and Learning Theory in Health Sciences (2 CH)

An overview of contemporary research and theory related to teaching and learning in health sciences education. Emphasis is placed on adult learning theory, learner-centered pedagogies, and evidence-based instructional approaches that support active and collaborative learning in higher education. Students examine foundational concepts that inform the design and delivery of instruction in hybrid and online academic environments, with attention to application across health professions programs.

HHS 6196 Foundations of Hybrid and Online Learning in Health Sciences (1 CH)

Overview of evidence-based research and theory supporting the use of online and hybrid environments for adult learning in the healthcare clinic or classroom setting. Includes a historical perspective of online and hybrid learning for occupational therapy practice and education with practical strategies to support and enhance learning in a virtual environment.

HHS 6298 Instructional Design and Technology Integration for Hybrid and Online Teaching (2 CH)

Examination of instructional design theories and current literature related to the development of effective hybrid and online learning experiences in health sciences education. Students explore the purposeful integration of educational technologies to support learning objectives, engagement, and assessment across modalities. Includes the design and development of instructional materials and learning artifacts for both online and face-to-face components, with peer teaching used to foster student-driven exploration of emerging topics in hybrid and online education.

HHS 6396 Designing and Evaluating Hybrid and Online Learning Experiences (3 CH)

Focuses on the application of educational theory and research to the development and evaluation of hybrid and online learning experiences in health sciences education. Through structured, simulated instructional scenarios, students design, implement, and refine a learning module or instructional plan that supports active adult learning. Emphasis is placed on assessment, evaluation, and continuous improvement, culminating in the creation of teaching artifacts and the refinement of an electronic teaching portfolio aligned with hybrid and online instructional practice.

HHS 6220 Professional Development and Leadership (2 CH)

In-depth analysis of criteria for professional excellence, advanced credentialing, and leadership in hybrid healthcare academic settings; development of a professional portfolio emphasizing competency in an evidence-based practice specialty or for preparation for teaching in a hybrid or online health sciences program. Exploration of leadership and power.
