Marcus Gallegos: Balancing Business and Client Empowerment
When Marcus Gallegos set out to open his own occupational therapy practice, it wasn’t just about providing treatment, it was about transforming care. Inspired by a deep commitment to client empowerment and health literacy, he envisioned a practice that addressed not just traditional rehabilitation but also the unique challenges faced by his community, including language barriers and low health literacy. “You are not just treating the condition, you are treating the person with the condition,” he shares, reflecting his client-centered philosophy.
Of course, launching and managing a practice came with hurdles. Navigating insurance complexities, handling financial logistics, and balancing administrative responsibilities with client care were all significant challenges. But learning the business side of OT provided a fresh perspective. “Understanding insurance and operations deepened my appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that supports client care. It reinforced my commitment to transparent and informed healthcare practices.”
For occupational therapists considering starting their own practice, Marcus offers a few key pieces of advice. Preparation is essential, from researching the business and insurance aspects to seeking mentorship from experienced professionals. But above all, he emphasizes the importance of staying true to your mission. “Stick to your mission statement and keep client care at the heart of everything you do.”
Looking ahead, there are exciting plans on the horizon. With goals to expand services, open a new location, and mentor the next generation of occupational therapists, Marcus is dedicated to pushing the profession forward. “I’m excited to implement innovative programs and work toward my Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) certification next year.” With a strong foundation from Baylor and a passion for making a difference, he continues to shape the future of occupational therapy, one empowered client at a time.
