Dr. Kirsten Davin Recognized as Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator® (CHSE®)

December 20, 2023
Congratulations Kirsten Davin - CHSE

Baylor University's Department of Occupational Therapy is pleased to announce that Kirsten Davin, OTD, OTR, ATP, SMS, CAPS, Clinical Assistant Professor and Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, has been recognized as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator® (CHSE®). The awarding of this specialty credential follows months of preparation by Davin along with the successful completion of the CHSE® Examination.

The Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator® certification was developed by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) as a service to the healthcare simulation community. The certification benefits the individual, their organization, the industry, and the community by:

  • Improving healthcare simulation education through the standardization and identification of best practices
  • Strengthening patient safety efforts through support of simulation modalities
  • Providing external validation and recognition of individual educator knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Strengthening organizational, community, and learner confidence in the quality of education
  • Garnering local support, resources, and commitment
  • Fostering a feedback loop between education and practice
  • Encouraging performance improvement and knowledge expansion of the individual educator
  • Providing a competitive edge in the community, program offerings, and grant funding
  • Recognizing expertise in simulation above and beyond domain expertise

The Society for Simulation in Healthcare identifies four main purposes for healthcare simulation: education, assessment, research, and health system integration. Simulation education, the focus of the CHSE® certification, is particularly relevant for the Baylor Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program. It is "a bridge between classroom learning and real-life clinical experience." Simulation makes learning more accessible and flexible and also allows for mistakes to turn into teaching opportunities—without harm to a patient or individual.

Davin's pursuit and successful completion of the CHSE® certification demonstrates her individual and Baylor OTD's organizational commitment to creating the optimal learning experience for students in the program. By enhancing simulation education expertise within the program, Baylor OTD students are receiving an even more thorough training experience that will better prepare them to enter the field of occupational therapy.

Congratulations, Dr. Davin!
